“Shall I not have intelligence with the earth? Am I not partly leaves and vegetable mould myself.”
– Henry David Thoreau
I have recently discovered a little secret. A secret that is inherently known, but much less done. A secret so profound that it is slowly transforming my physical health day by day. Internally and Externally. I am experiencing increasing vigor, energy and mental clarity, yet decreasing body fat percentage. I have tested and trialed countless ways of consuming food with health as my focal goal, but nothing has compared to this little nugget of wisdom. It is simply amazing.
What is it?………Vegetables.
I have started consuming vegetables in the highest quantity I have ever done in my daily life. I eat them for breakfast, post-workout, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. I have created a rule to eat vegetables with every main meal I eat during the day. My goal is 10 servings each and every day, and it is transforming my body.
Why I believe it is so amazing?
Not only do vegetables provide every possible nutrient our bodies could ever need, I have found them to be a profoundly efficient anti-inflammatory for your digestive system. Why is that important? Because millions of people are walking around with bloating, poor digestion, poor nutrient absorption, and generally inflamed digestive organs. When you are bloated and inflamed in your stomach, your foods absorption is being severely stunted, causing a feeling of constant heaviness in the lower portion of your abdomen.
Since I have shifted towards eating an abundance of vegetables each day, my digestive system has never felt so responsive and efficient. I am digesting everything properly without any feeling of bloating. Now the predecessor of my new habit was still quite healthy. However, whilst enjoying my new addiction to vegetables, I have realised how many of the so called “healthy foods” I used to eat, actually caused so many digestive issues and bloating. Foods such as Greek Yoghurt, Wholegrain Oats, Cottage Cheese, Non Organic Cocoa Powders, Natural Sweeteners, Non organic wine, non organic peanut butter and virtually anything that comes out of a package or can. These were the last few things that I thought were safe, but turns out they weren’t. This list doesn’t include the more obvious things that I had previously left out of my lifestyle, like Supplements (Yes protein powders as well), Bread, anything touted as “natural wholegrain” and comes from a packet, and all liquids apart from black coffee, green tea and water (Yes that includes dairy, soy and almond milk).
Filling up my daily intake with an abundance of vegetables has created a vibrancy in my body that I have never felt. I am eating more and more food each day, without ever feeling hungry or starved. My rule is that my plate has to be at least half full of vegetables when I eat. The remainder of my lifestyle is made up of lean meats, eggs, fruits, nuts, coconut, honey, spices, organic olive oil and organic red wine.
Quite simply compared, my new eating habits crush every other version of healthy eating I have developed and tried. I am so much more aware of the foods that don’t agree with me, now that I feel so light all the time.
This is truly liberating!
I used to feel like I was doing all of the right things, but I could never shed that last bit of stomach fat and was beginning to come to terms with the fact that maybe it was just my body type. I had always envisioned a lifestyle that allowed for me to look amazing 24/7, and I have finally found the recipe. I have manufactured a lean look before, but it was with some methods that are not sustainable over the long-term. I have always tried to achieve my goals through habits that are sustainable day in and day out. This ensures that success in a particular area is not just a fluke, or a fleeting moment in time. It is a thought out practice that embeds itself in your lifestyle. You need to be your actions, not do them.
Point is, that eating an abundance of vegetables every day has put the last missing piece of the health puzzle together for me.
It doesn’t really sound like a secret, but until you try it, you won’t understand the potential you have to feel amazing.
Are you eating a true abundance of vegetables? Try it and feel amazing 🙂
